Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy played for Middlesbrough, Blackburn and Redcar Albion

Long before Beverly Hills Cop and Dr Dolittle was Eddie Murphy, born in 1921. A Middlesbrough lad, he began his career with South Bank St Peter’s in the ’30s. Murphy joined Boro in 1939 and was a regular in the wartime squad, playing at inside forward.

He joined Blackburn Rovers in 1947, later going on to make over 200 appearances for Halifax Town. He was also part of their giant-killing run of 1952/53 which saw them reach the fifth round of the FA Cup. Murphy came back to Teesside to finish his career, signing as a permit player for Redcar Albion.
