George Newton

George Newton played for Redcar and Bradford City

George Newton, a recruit for Redcar’s final campaign in the Northern League, was a talented youn

g forward. He left the club when they dropped out of the league, then had an unsuccessful trial with Middlesbrough shortly afterwards.

Newton was eventually picked up by Bradford City, who had only just dropped out of the top flight. He spent a season at Valley Parade, playing mainly in their reserve team in the Central League, despite scoring a “beautiful” equaliser against Morecambe in a friendly in September.

Two months later, he fractured his collarbone in a match against Aston Villa, keeping him out of action for weeks. His injury added “to the burden of the Bradford City club in a time of need”. He joined up with Division Three North outfit Durham City at the beginning of the 1923/24 campaign. Standing at 5ft11, he was one of the tallest members of the team.
